Copépodos, hidromedusas y sifonóforos: diversidad y distribución en el Estrecho de Gerlache, Península Antártica

Resumen

El proyecto Biodiversidad y condiciones oceanográficas del Estrecho de Gerlache “Biogerlache-Antártica”; tiene como objetivo realizar la caracterización de la fauna antártica del Estrecho, generando nuevos aportes a los inventarios biológicos de la Antártica, enfocando el presente trabajo en la biodiversidad de la comunidad zooplanctónica, específicamente en copépodos, hidromedusas y sifonóforos colectados durante la III Expedición de Colombia a la Antártida “Almirante Padilla” (2016-2017). El muestreo se realizó en siete estaciones oceanográficas ubicadas a lo largo del Estrecho de Gerlache, con arrastres verticales entre la profundidad máxima de la estación y superficie. Se identificaron 4100 organismos pertenecientes a 38 especies del phylum Arthropoda (Órdenes: Calanoida y Cyclopoida) y 10 especies del phylum Cnidaria (Subclases: Hydroidolina y Trachylina). Las familias de copépodos con mayor riqueza de géneros son Aetideidae y Metridinidae, siendo Metridia gerlachei, Chiridius polaris y Gaetanus tenuispinosus especies frecuentes en más del 50% de las estaciones. Las especies descritas son comunes para la Península Antártica (Mar de Bellingshausen, Mar de Scotia, Mar de Weddell), se amplia el rango de distribución de cuatro copépodos para las aguas epipelágicas y mesopélagicas del Estrecho de Gerlache. Otras especies frecuentes son las hidromedusas Arctapodema sp. y Solmundella bitentaculata, y los sifonóforos Dimophyes arctica y Diphyes antarctica, estos últimos se colectaron tanto en forma poligástrica como eudoxia, siendo esta última la forma dominante en todas las estaciones. Las estaciones con mayor densidad de organismos se registraron cercanas a la Isla de Brabant y al Canal Schollaert; área en donde se presenta un intercambio termohalino entre el Mar de Bellingshausen y el Estrecho de Gerlache, permitiendo que el ensamblaje dentro del Estrecho sea dinámico y altamente heterogéneo. Este estudio aporta valiosa información e incrementará las ocurrencias reportadas en el Sistema de Información sobre Biodiversidad Marina del Comité Científico de Investigaciones Antárticas (SCAR-MarBIN) en el Estrecho de Gerlache.
