Malpelo IslandAbstract
Malpelo Island, located approximately 500 km from Buenaventura, is an isolated volcanic island that has never been connected to the mainland and holds exceptional strategic and ecological value for Colombia. In contrast to the decline in marine biodiversity observed in other national waters, Malpelo supports extraordinarily high marine species richness and biomass, including endemic species and globally threatened organisms such as the whale shark. This biological oasis hosts large aggregations of fish of major ecological and commercial relevance, with total fish biomass conservatively estimated at hundreds of metric tons. Its designation as a Fauna and Flora Sanctuary, the restriction of fishing activities, and its recognition as a UNESCO World Heritage Site underscore Colombia’s responsibility for its conservation. Although a comprehensive scientific understanding of the ecological processes governing this system is still limited, Malpelo should continue to be protected as an irreplaceable natural asset of global importance.
